Náměšť nad Oslavou
A small town at the foot of Vysočina, 40 kilometres west of Brno, on the scenic banks of the lower part of the river Oslava. The local name "Náměšť" is of a Czech origin. It used to give the name to a place (settlement above the river) where something was placed, accumulated, deposited - sand, loess, earth.
The Náměšť region was involved, even though sporadically, in almost all waves of Moravian prehistoric settlement. From the Paleolithic, they had been moving against the flow of the Oslava and Jihlava rivers. The beginnings of the systematic settlement of Náměšť region fall, however, to the early 12th century. From the earliest times, along the river Oslava, on the hills, there used to be an important route leading from the Brno lower castle to Jihlava and further to Bohemia. The oldest written record of this river dates back to 1146 (aqua que dicitur Ozlawa).
